Christmas Gifts

Before you think I'm being heartless, I understand that it has the potential to be comfortable and I do like the fact that you don't need to wear socks. However, I also hope that all my aesthetic friends realize that gift certificates are a much more valuable and wanted present instead of the adult onesie.

I found this report on Fox News. It came out a couple years ago, but is still interesting nonetheless!

Botox Used to Combat High-Heel Pain

Doctors are using Botox injections to cure high-heel wearers of a condition known as “stilettotarsal,” or pain in the soft tissue of the ball of the foot.

Caused by years of tottering around on high heels, many women are forced to forgo wearing their favorite Manolo Blahniks and opt for flats instead.

The Botox is injected into the metatarsal region and plumps up the ball of the foot, protecting the nerves and soft tissue.

The metatarsal is one of five cylinder shaped bones in the foot.

Botox is approved by the Food and Drug Administrated to treat wrinkles and frown lines in the U.S., but it has also been used for off-label purposes for conditions such as excessive sweating and migraines.

Baby Boomers Keep Cosmetic Procedures on the Rise

Facelifts, eyelid lifts among anti-aging surgeries up in 2009 --

CHICAGO – The baby boomer generation may be well into their 50s and 60s, but that doesn’t mean they’re ready to concede their looks just yet. In fact, many “boomers” are determined to maintain their once-youthful appearance. According to a recent survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, anti-aging procedures such as facelifts and blepharoplasty (eyelid lifts) are on the rise. So are botox and fillers. The bottom line is that baby boomers are aging but they don’t want their looks to do the same.

“The baby boomers are getting older but they still feel young and they want to look that way too,” said AACS President Mark Berman, MD. “With anti-aging procedures, people tend to feel much better about themselves afterward.” Facelifts rose 44 percent from 2008 to 2009 in procedures by AACS members, totaling 34,455 in ’09. Blepharoplasty procedures went up 42 percent, from 42,602 to 60,507. Similarly, non-invasive anti-aging procedures such as Botox (up 157 percent) and fillers (up 245 percent) rose exponentially.

In procedures performed by AACS members, the average age of facelift patients is 54.1 years. The average age for blepharoplasty is 52.3 years. In addition, the average age of patients receiving Botox is 46.6 and fillers is 46.8. “I think this might come as a surprise to the public when they see just how many baby boomers are trying to slow down the aging process,” Berman said. “As a surgeon, these numbers aren’t surprising because we see older patients all the time.”

Popular procedures and special offers

Did you know the top five nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in 2008 were:

- Botox injection (2,464,123 procedures)

- laser hair removal (1,280,964 procedures)

- hyaluronic acid (1,262,848 procedures)

- chemical peel (591,808 procedures)

- laser skin resurfacing (570,880 procedures)

Of course, we can not fit every client into these categories. What is important is that information about different procedures is displayed in a manner easy to find. Beyond leave behind material, notify your clients when their is a special incentive given by a product's manufactors. For example, until December 31st, the Restylane family products are offering up to a $450 savings. Do you have an effective way to let your clientell take advantage of this offer?

What effect do celebrities have on plastic surgery?

I found by this article by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery very interesting. I'm sure like me, many people have wondered what kind of influence do celebrities have on the most basic aesthetic procedures to the more advance plastic surgeries. The following was taken from an ISAPS survey. Enjoy!

THE WOMEN

Breasts and lips were the leading categories for celebrity choices by women followed by

buttocks, nose and abdomen. The categories are listed in order of popularity.

Breasts – The clear choice for breast look-alikes was Pamela Anderson, followed by Brazilian beauty Gisele Bundchen, American pop princess Britney Spears and Xuxa, a popular Brazilian entertainer. Interestingly, this category also elicited negative comments from surgeons who expressed their patients’ opinions. A significant percentage of responding doctors reported that in individual women’s views, they did not want to look like certain women. Pamela Anderson also led this group, followed by Dolly Parton and Victoria Beckham.

Lips – In the 1940s and 1950s, Betty Grable insured her legs, the most famous in the world at the time. If that was true then, Angelina Jolie should not only insure her lips, she should have them trademarked. Jolie was the overwhelming leader as the lips of choice for women undergoing this procedure. The alternate reference for lips was Julia Roberts.

Buttocks – The leading choice among women was Jennifer Lopez – by a huge percentage. Some doctors noted that they never get requests for this procedure (3%). Other choices included Juliana Paes of Brazil, and Americans Halle Berry and Sandra Bullock.

Nose – There was no doubt that Nicole Kidman’s nose was a clear favorite for women around the world. Secondary choices included Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Xuxa, and in a nod to classicism, Grace Kelly and Tasmanian born Princess Mary of Denmark.

Abdomen – In some cultures, revealing midriffs is a fashion statement. The favorite choice among women around the world is Giselle B_ndchen, followed closely by Shakira, Demi Moore, Britney Spears (early in her career), and Thalia (Mexico).

Eyes Angelina Jolie was the clear favorite in this category. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Demi Moore, Michelle Pfeiffer and Salma Hayek were also prominent. And, proving that cinematic beauty is eternal, there were numerous references to Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Catherine Deneuve and Greta Garbo.

Cheeks – The woman most often referenced was Sophia Loren, followed by Michele Pfeiffer, Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie and Marilyn Monroe.

Legs – There was a three-way tie in this category: Tina Turner, Sharon Stone and Cameron Diaz, followed by Jennifer Lopez.

Hair – These procedures are not as common for women as they are for men. The leading choice was Gisele B_ndchen, followed closely by Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts.

Chin – There was no clear cut leader in this category. Among the names referenced were Sonia Braga, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts and Charlize Theron.

Forehead – This was the least referenced category of the eleven choices. Leading the selections were Nicole Kidman, Madonna, Elizabeth Taylor and Oprah Winfrey.

THE MEN

Abdomen, nose and eyes were the three leading categories for men, followed by chest, chin and buttocks. The categories are listed in order of popularity.

Abdomen Brad Pitt just beat out Matthew McConaughey. They were followed by action film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jean-Claude Van Damme and soccer great David Beckham.

Nose – This category was led by Brad Pitt, followed by George Clooney. There were numerous mentions by doctors who noted that patients expressed personal concerns that any procedure would not leave them looking like Michael Jackson.

Eyes – The top three men referenced in this category were George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck.

Chest Arnold Schwarzenegger was the overwhelming choice followed by Paulo Zulu (Brazil).

Chin – Many more doctors referenced celebrity influences on male chin procedures than women. The most often referenced were Clooney and Pitt followed by Kirk Douglas, Ricky Martin, Antonio Banderas and Errol Flynn.

Buttocks – Here Brad Pitt had the clear lead with Mel Gibson, Ricky Martin and Paulo Zulu following.

Cheeks – There was a tie in the category between Clooney and Pitt. Tom Cruise and Paulo Zulu followed.

Lips Clooney and Pitt led followed by Antonio Banderas and Korean movie star Dong-Kun Jang.

Hair Tom Cruise led followed by David Beckham.

Legs David Beckham led followed by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Forehead Cruise and Pitt tied in this category.
